The academic community prospers when talents from diverse backgrounds come together to solve scientific problems. Since 2019, the BCS Application Assistance Program (AAP) has been striving to narrow the information gap among applicants during the graduate school application process.

The AAP is a volunteer-based, student-run initiative to support applicants by answering questions related to career planning, graduate programs, student life, application materials and more. We particularly encourage those that have to overcome unusual adversity or come from non-traditional academic backgrounds to use this resource.

AAP mentors are graduate students from various labs in computational, molecular, systems, and cognitive tracks in the BCS department. They come from both private and public universities or industries in countries around the world, identify with different cultures and affinity groups, and are at different stages of their graduate training. Each mentor has their unique set of perspectives to offer, which is shaped by their personal trajectory and training experience. We encourage applicants to talk with different people to gain more holistic insights about their own graduate application. Please keep in mind that the views of AAP mentors do not represent the stance of MIT BCS, and your participation in the AAP is entirely independent from your application to the BCS graduate program.

By signing up for the AAP between September 1 and November 20, applicants will have the option to talk with AAP mentors through one-on-one office hours or small group panel discussions. You will receive instructions on how to register for office hours and panel discussions via email. All information shared with AAP mentors will not be shared beyond the AAP, and certainly not with any BCS faculty.

AAP 2024 will close on November 20, 2024 so as to give applicants enough time to work on their application materials. Application to the BCS graduate program closes on December 1, 2024.

You can learn more about the history of AAP from our annual report. For further questions, please email [email protected].
